Could Canadian scientists be on the verge of unlocking the secrets of the Universe? From incredible underground laboratories to off-road vehicles fit for a superhero, Canada is home to some of the world's most impressive scientific and engineering accomplishments. Hosted by Kevin Brauch (da Vinci: Unlocking the Genius, Thirsty Traveller) Discovery HD explores mind-blowing technological achievements from coast to coast.
Highlights from MegaWorld: Canada includes:
The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNOLAB) In the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNOLAB) located 2km underground in Sudbury, Ontario scientists are exploring matter that may change what we thought we knew about the sun and our universe. The lab houses state of the art equipment capable of capturing invisible elementary particles called neutrinos as they hurl from the sun at the speed of light. Find out what these neutrinos are revealing about the sun, the universe and what the SNOLAB is investigating next.
Martin Mars The Martin Mars flying boats were originally produced by the US Navy for carrying troops and cargo but in 1959 they were bought and converted into the world's largest water bomber, used to combat forest fires in British Columbia. This behemoth scoops water into its belly from nearby lakes, mixes it with a fire retardant chemical and dumps the concoction onto the flames. Incredibly, the Martin Mars can hold up to 27,250 litres of water, enough to cover an area of up to 16 square kilmeteres.
Hydro Quebec Hydro Quebec is currently in the middle of a mega-construction project. To keep up with the demand for electricity, they are moving an entire river near James Bay and building a new powerhouse, dam and even a spillway.
Spyder The Spyder - made by Montreal-based company Bombardier - is the kind of ride that would make even Batman jealous. Part motorcycle, part ATV and all fun, this three-wheeled roadster combines the performance and sensation of a motorcycle with the comfort and control of sports car.
The International Ice Patrol Team Icebergs are a serious threat to the safety of vessels working in arctic waters. High above the Atlantic the International Ice Patrol team uses sophisticated tracking technologies to locate the icebergs, frequently saving the lives aboard the ships and oil rigs in the area.
