The Migrant Crisis: Hope and Heartbreak It’s a year since Ranvir Singh visited Calais, the French port town at the forefront of what’s been dubbed the worst migration crisis since WW2. Over the last six weeks Tonight has spent time in the Calais camp known as the 'jungle'. We met Maroof, Zubair, and Adil, all three have fled Afghanistan and the lawless rule and persecution of the Taliban and Islamic State. Each night the trio attempt to break into trucks and trains bound for Britain. We also meet Keith, who regularly transits the Calais – Folkstone route. He told us of the increasing terror he feels just for doing his job, and having had stowaways on his refrigerated lorry he’s also anxious about the fines levied by the government on truckers if any stowaways are found. In the last twelve months the government have pledged £19m in a bid to stem the problem of illegal migration from Calais, and with a further Anglo - French pledge in August have they done enough to stop people breaking in to Britain? And just this week, an image so powerful that it caused perceptions of migrants in the UK and around the world to change overnight. The plight of 3yr old Alan Kurdi who drowned in the Mediterranean alongside his mother and brother, has intensified pressure on David Cameron to accept more Syrian refugees in Britain.
