Hannibal: The Man, The Myth, The Mystery

As a near-mythical figure known as one of the greatest commanders of the ancient world, what do we know about the real Hannibal? His name resonates throughout history - a mythical figure, one of the greatest commanders of the ancient world. But what of the man behind the legend? A man who handed Rome the key to the future by allowing them to learn his tactics and use them against him; and who was ultimately betrayed by his own people, spending his final years on the run from the Romans. Profile of the Carthaginian general, featuring contributions from historians and archaeologists on his campaign against Rome. The programme considers how Hannibal was defeated when he seemed to have his enemies at his mercy, and examines the impact of this struggle on Europe over the centuries to come.
